Brazilian or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, made famous by the Gracie family in the early days of the UFC, is one of the most respected and effective grappling arts in the world. "BJJ" is not based on strength or but on using leverage as technique. This allows a much smaller person to control and defeat a larger opponent with the ability to injure to the degree necessary to the situation.
Since most street fights (or MMA fights) end up on the ground, BJJ concentrates on the hierarchy of superior and inferior positions on the ground. This foundation allows practitioners to control and submit their opponents. Our program is distinct from other Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MN grappling schools in the Minneapolis St. Paul Area, in that, we give serious attention to the clinch and takedown phase (Which is especially important in a climate like Minnesota!) Skill in the grappling range is necessary to complete your martial arts training in order to truly defend yourself. For MMA training, effective understanding of Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Wrestling is an imperative. Class Format: BJJ Class begins with a 5-10 minute warm-up followed by the professor demonstrating techniques, and the students drilling of techniques. In some cases students do live drilling for specific positions and/or certain submissions. Competition class students focus on live take downs, rolling, positional rolling, and conditioning. We teach both "Gi" & "No-Gi" modes of training.
